Stoke were tonight hoping to have beaten the transfer deadline after announcing the triple signing of Eidur Gudjohnsen, Jermaine Pennant and Marc Wilson.
The Potters confirmed the captures of the trio nearly an hour and a half after the window closed, having thrashed out deals to sign Gudjohnsen and Pennant on loan and Wilson permanently.
The club were awaiting confirmation from the Football Association and Premier League that the transfers had been completed in time.
The arrival of the 31-year-old former Chelsea and Barcelona forward Gudjohnsen from Monaco for the season would be a coup for the Stoke manager Tony Pulis.
Pennant, the former Liverpool winger, agreed a loan deal to stay at the Britannia Stadium until January after a troubled year at Real Zaragoza.
Portsmouth’s Wilson joined in a player-plus-cash move that saw Liam Lawrence and Dave Kitson move in the opposite direction.
